The book is a poetry book inspired by the frustration and disappointment, caused by my country’s (Nigeria’s) aborted nationhood, and the apparent inability of people to rescue the situation. The impediments to my country’s growth and development are personified and broadly referred to as “Encumbrance”, while the sense of despondency and the state of positive meditation are given the name Akimbo. The latter aspect of Akimbo can be manifested in “a posture of defiance and deep cogitation in the bid to chart a solution to a problem.” The perception of Encumbrance and Akimbo is a logical base of the title of the collection Encumbered, We Stand Akimbo.
Encumbered, We Stand Akimbo is one long poem, broken into thematic units which are organically related. The first part is a presentation of details of societal malady, while part two exposes the moral bankruptcy of the people. In the third part, hope in the future is expressed. It is best for the reader to see the entire work as one poem.
